Time to drain your pool?

Time to drain your pool?

Untreated runoff is a threat to our local waterways. Taking the time to follow the proper procedures when discharging water from pools and hot tubs will help keep our waters healthy for fish and other aquatic life. Never dump pollutants, like chlorinated water, into a storm drain.

HOV – Planning Continues

Planning continues for a major interceptor rehabilitation project

We sometimes take for granted that when we push the handle on the toilet the waste will be flushed away. For residents of Kaukauna, Kimberly, Little Chute, Combined Locks and the Darboy Sanitary District that essential service is the responsibility of the Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District.

Planning continues for a major interceptor rehabilitation project that will address corrosion of the interceptor system’s concrete pipe and manhole structures. More information on the project is available at https://hvmsd.org/category/projects/.

Project plan: HOV Sewer District

Project plan: HOV Sewer District

About a year from now work will be underway to install an acid-resistant liner in the Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District’s interceptor.

The 5.5-mile pipe carries wastewater from residences and businesses between Kimberly and Kaukauna to the treatment plant next to the Ahlstrom-Munksjo-Thilmany Mill.

The project is needed to halt corrosion of the pipe that threatens the long-term viability of the interceptor. https://hvmsd.org/

Flush it. Forget it.

Flush it. Forget it.

Heart of the Valley MSD Interceptor Rehabilitation Project

That pretty much sums up what we do every time we flush the toilet. It’s assumed the waste will be carried away for proper treatment and disposal. T

hat’s the job of the Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District (HOVMSD), which continues to prepare for a major interceptor rehabilitation project.

Due to surface corrosion of the main pipe that carries the waste to the treatment plant, an acid resistant liner needs to be installed.

That will ensure we can continue to flush it and forget it! Look for updates here as planning continues for the work to take place next year and in 2024. https://hvmsd.org/

Landscape with Lakes in Mind

Landscape with Lakes in Mind

Your beautiful outdoor space doesn’t have to come at the price of clean lakes and streams.

Minimizing runoff reduces damage to your property and lessens the amount of potentially harmful substances reaching our local waterways.

Opt for grassy areas and native plantings whenever possible. Where needed, install pavement like open bricks that allow water to sink into the ground.

Interceptor System Rehabilitation project

Interceptor System Rehabilitation project

You’ll be hearing more about the Heart of the Valley Metropolitan Sewerage District (HOVMSD) in the months ahead as the District’s Interceptor System Rehabilitation project moves forward. It’s a major project for an important service that residents don’t often think about.

The 5.5-mile interceptor system has experienced significant corrosion of the concrete pipe and manhole structures. The pipe remains structurally sound and has plenty of capacity for future growth, but it needs rehabilitation. The project will install a new acid resistant liner to head off further damage.

Car Washing Tips

Car Washing Tips

Washing one vehicle may not seem like an issue, but collective residential
car washing can add up to a big problem for local water bodies. If you
choose to wash your vehicle at home, wash on an area that absorbs water,
like gravel or grass. This can filter dirty wash water before it enters
groundwater, storm drains, or rivers. Be sure to use biodegradable,
phosphate-free, water-based cleaners and always empty wash buckets into
sinks or toilets.

Grass Swale: The waterway in your yard

Grass Swale: The waterway in your yard

Often inaccurately called ditches, swales are actually stormwater structures! Swales carry water away from roadways while promoting infiltration. Slowing down rain water and encouraging ponding is good because it allows water to soak into the ground, with soil and plant roots trapping water pollution.
If you have a swale on your property, you can help keep it working properly to protect our waters by:

  • removing trash
  • reporting any signs of water pollution to your municipality
  • never replacing the grass or modifying the shape of the swale
  • preventing off-street parking or other activities that may cause rutting or compaction of soil in the swale
